We've had some great news - our films 'All That Glitters' and 'The Pack' have both been nominated for the same award at the Landshuter KurzFilmFest taking place in Munich this March.

Both films are also to be shown in Berlin in a couple of days at the British Shorts festival.

Owen Tooth and Paul Hammond at the BFI

There are two things to notice with the above photograph. First, that Owen and Paul went down to the BFI Southbank to introduce their short film The Pack at the onedotzero festival over the weekend. Second, that Paul is uncommonly tall, Owen being of average height and definitely not short...

The screening was brilliant, as was the open bar in the green room and the after party DJ'd by Sam Spiegel.

Onedotzero is a truly international festival, taking their brilliantly curated selection around the world in coming months.

Soundtrack Derby

November has been a big month for Toothpix. Our films have been seen in three continents (television in the US and Turkey, four US festivals, a festival in South Africa and an incredible festival in Trieste, Italy - as well as plenty of screenings in Old Blightey, of course!)

We were also there to film the culminating event for Soundtrack Derby and the Festival of Light in Derby's market square, sending a live feed to the BBC Big Screen of the amazing dance (courtesy of Surtal Arts) and spoken word acts and then shooting the after-event gig in The Box inside Quad.

This weekend we're heading to London for the opening of the massive onedotzero festival to introduce a film there, too. It's non-stop!

Hitting screens in the USA, Turkey, London, Nottingham, Manchester, Sheffield, and Lincoln this month!

This month, Toothpix seems to be everywhere! The Toothpix blog has just hit 10,000 pageviews, for a start.

The short films 'The Pack' and 'All That Glitters' are both being screened on Shorts TV in the USA and Turkey on heavy rotation. The Pack has also been selected by onedotzero to be part of their international touring digital festival. Screenings for the strand begin at the BFI in London on November 26th.

Last week, All That Glitters was screened at a film festival in Manchester and last night the South Yorkshire Filmmakers Network screening at the Showroom Workstation cinema in Sheffield hosted not one, not two, but THREE films directed by Owen in its lineup (The Pack, All That Glitters and the Luxury Stranger music video). It was a fantastic night with a great selection of shorts followed by a DJ set by the band. The bar even had a Luxury Stranger ale for the evening with a free single with every pint bought.

Next weekend sees the Nottingham Mayhem festival kicking off and we're proud to have a film in their exclusive shorts strand. There's an amazing lineup of films over the weekend which we'll be enjoying, too.

All That Glitters has been nominated for an award ('Killer Short 2011') in the Boston Killer Film Fest 2011

Finally, we're completing an edit this week of a film to launch proceedings for the Lincoln Frequency Festival of Digital Culture.

Showroom Shorts a Toothpix feast!

On October 18th, the Sheffield Workstation cinema will be hosting the premiere of a brand new music video for Notts band 'Luxury Stranger' as well as screening The Pack and All That Glitters in their 'Showroom Shorts' strand. That's three Toothpix films in one night!

The screening will be followed by a party with a DJ set by the band. Tickets are free, but book early to avoid disappointment.

All That Glitters has also been invited to screen in Wirksworth alongside Nick Whitfield's brilliant debut feature 'Skeletons' with a Q&A from Owen after the screening.

Finally, The Pack has been selected to run on Saturday 29th October in Mayhem festival at the Broadway Cinema in Nottingham. It's a festival we've been attending since its inception and it's gone from strength to strength, with this year's lineup looking the strongest yet.

More exciting news from the festival circuit as ‘The Pack’ is accepted to festivals in Sweden and Portugal!

Sweden’s ‘Fantastic Film Festival’ runs from the 15-24th September and has selected our short to compete for the Audience Choice Award.

‘Motel X’ is Portugal’s only international horror festival and attracts some of the biggest names in horror. 'The Pack' is paired with the multi-million-dollar-grossing movie 'Cabin Fever' from this year's special guest Eli Roth, and Toothpix's Owen Tooth is there right now in Portugal taking in the red-carpet atmos as well as a marathon of the best new horror from around the globe.

Toothpix shorts picked up for international Distribution!

Both ‘The Pack’ and ‘All That Glitters’ have been picked up for distribution by Shorts International!

Shorts International are among the leading short film distributors in the world and have a catalogue of over 3000 short films. They have the prestigious honour of distributing the short listed Oscar short films each year, and are the only shorts distributor on iTunes besides Disney and Pixar.

Toothpix are delighted with this unexpected news and are hopeful the shorts will be picked up by international broadcasters.

Off the back of the Moseley Festival, both ‘The Pack’ and ‘All That Glitters’ have been invited to ArtsFest.

ArtsFest is the UK’s biggest Arts festival and takes place in Birmingham during the 10^th and 11^th of September.

‘All That Glitters’ has also been invited to screen at the family friendly Wirksworth Festival this September. The organisers loved ‘The Pack’ but rightfully thought its themes were too adult for a family audience!

As you'll have seen plenty of pictures from 'The Pack' and 'All That Glitters' already on this site, here's something different - a photograph of Owen's wife taken on his new mobile phone. Technology is moving fast! Expect to see film projects completed on mobile handsets on this site in the near future.

Monster School's out for Summer!

Monster School has been released and is getting an amazing reception. Designed for use in mainstream schools to help combat bullying of people with learning disabilities, the film has now also been adopted for screenings in specialist schools.

Monster School is the first animation from Toothpix - hopefully the first of many!

Two Toothpix shorts selected for Moseley festival

'The Pack' and 'All That Glitters' have both been selected to screen in the Moseley Festival over July in their 'The Cut' film strand.

All That Glitters will play four times throughout the fortnight, with The Pack playing in the final screening of the festival on July 17th.

The festival is a massive event with all sorts of events in a multitude of venues around Moseley, Birmingham and we're thrilled to be involved.

The group preferred the idea of a script to read out rather than answering questions in an interview, and the powerful result which we worked on together is already raising awareness for the scheme and the cutting-edge ideas they employ.

New film released, help needed for festival film.

Toothpix has had confirmation that Derby Museum & Art Gallery want us to make a celebration film for their Joseph Wright festival. Starting in late July, there will a series of events to raise the profile of the painter's works in his home city of Derby. Toothpix will be there to gather the thoughts of the pubic, right through to the culmination of the festival in February 2012 when the new Wright Gallery is opened. We'll be looking for assistants, trainee journalists and young producers to help up on the way, so get in touch if you're interested!

Watch the video above to see a dance video Owen has created for Déda, filmed over several seasons at three adiZone sites around Derby. An adiZone is an Adidas-sposored outdoor gym, which we invaded with young dancers to have a great time and show off some moves. The film is premiereing at the Derby Assembly Rooms as part of the 'Be Inspiring' event on June 28th promoted by Derby City Partnership.

We at Toothpix took a trip to Soho to record the voiceover for 'Monster School', our latest film for Mencap, with the voice talents of the wonderful Christian Brassington. Recording in 'Voiceover Soho', Christian took our serious lines and made them funny, and our funny lines and made them hilarious - the man is a genius.

He's featured in a wealth of British features and having met him, it's no wonder.

Friday 22nd also saw the premiere in Derby of two recent Toothpix shorts, playing to a packed cinema. 'All That Glitters' and 'The Pack' are being sent out to festivals around the world this week, so look out for screening updates.

The next month looks set to be a busy one for us, animating the film for Mencap as well as working with Quad and three local libraries to create a series of documentaries.

School for Monsters Mencap animation gets underway

We've started work animating a cartoon for Mencap aimed at combating bullying in mainstream schools.

The characters have been designed by the awesome Cherie Zamazing and the motion tests look great.

Next week we'll be recording the voices in Soho with a brilliant actor (we're keeping that secret for now, but as a clue, he was in Elizabeth: The Golden Age and Burke and Hare).

This will be the first Toothpix animation, but it's so much fun, we're sure it won't be the last.

We've also had a brilliant letter through from a client we made a film for in February:

"We all had a really positive experience filming the DVD. I found it to be a really positive experience and a transparent process. Thanks for making everything run so smoothly!

My previous experiences of filming had always been fraught and quite off putting. Thanks for changing my experience for the better!"

It promises to be a great night, with several other shorts by local film makers playing, followed by drinks in a selection of bars.

Mystery solved!

We received this email from Courtesy, the mother of Nancy (star of 'All That Glitters - read below for more on that):

" I saw your news article, which I can shed light on. The thing through the post is what's apparently a Christmas card for you and your wife from Nancy, reason she didn't put her name on is because, well, you know, everyone in the world knows Nancy and I didn't change it because well, frankly I quite like how she does things and she should be herself and I knew you'd find out sooner or later, so there you are, mystery solved - she was really happy to see it on the site though, better than a fridge!"

All That Glitters receives its premiere on April 22nd at QUAD cinema in Derby from 5-6pm. If you'd like a ticket, get in touch fast as it's looking like it will be a fully booked screening!

The film is a dark fantasy playing with the Narnia theme. Playing alongside will be the Toothpix film 'Daybreak, Nightfall' which was shot on equipment loaned from the University of Derby as part of the prize Owen won with his short Labyrinth Derbicus, as well as films from three other local film directors.

The Christmas Mystery!

Over the Christmas holidays, the pictured letter arrived, the address (we assume) written by an adult - but inside the envelope was a drawing and an additional piece of paper with a few scribbles on and nothing else.

It's slightly reminiscent of Ben Wigley's PS Your Mystery Sender, a film about anonymous parcels being sent to the designer Paul Smith - only this time we think perhaps it's a mystery due to someone forgetting to add the final piece to the puzzle rather than trying to be confusing?

Toothpix short shown in ID Fest

The award-winning short film 'Labyrinth Derbicus' has been invited to screen before Neil Marshall's excellent movie 'Dog Soldiers' as part of QUAD's ID Fest. Catch it this Saturday evening (27th November)

ID fest is a brilliantly curated series of films and events looking at English identity through cinema, what it means to be English and how it is represented in film.

Also showing at the event is 'Office Orphan', a short film by David Lilley which Owen Tooth directed photography for. The film has already been screened in eight film festivals and is well worth catching - see it at ID Fest with Great Expectations.

How to write a thesis in three months...

We at Toothpix were lucky enough to film a talk all about writing a Thesis in three months by author and expert blogger James Hayton over at the University of Nottingham.

James studied Physics at the University and came over from Barcelona to give the speech which had some golden tips for time management generally. One nugget was making sure you've got some work done before checking emails, and only checking them half an hour before lunch or the end of the day to make sure you can't procrastinate for too long.

Owen also recently had the proud moment of being his wife Emma's 'handbag' at the opening of her new exhibition of paintings at Lazarides Gallery in London, where a new Toothpix DVD was premiered alongside a sumptuous book release.

Three Wishes for Derby

A subtle documentary, giving voice to many of the hard to reach groups of Derby has just been released by Toothpix. Commissioned by Derby City Partnership, the film asks Eastern European immigrants, deaf people, homeless people, sex workers, the LGBT community, a dance group for differently able people and a village cut off by poor transport links about changes they'd like to see in the future.

Sometimes surprisingly simple and similar answers come from the groups and the film was used as part of the consultation strategy for DCP in planning the future of the city over the next fifteen years.

Toothpix accompanied Marketing Derby to central London for an Embassy event aimed at bringing new business to the city and created a short web video of the event. You can watch the film here. Toothpix are also making a film for Marketing Derby about the recent Brazil v Croatia football match held at Pride Park Stadium.

New shoot on RED ONE camera

Last week shooting wrapped on Owen's latest short film, an abstract and beautiful teaser for a feature idea. The footage came back far better than we dared hope for after a brilliant shoot and audio work should begin in the next few weeks.

The film was shot with six actors in a warehouse in Derby with a full crew using the University of Derby's RED ONE camera (pictured) and a set of beautiful lenses once used by Stanley Kubrick.

Owen was given use of the camera as a prize for coming first place in a film competition - contestants had 24 hours to shoot and edit a three minute film. You can see the winning entry on YouTube now.

Big Screening for Aimhigher

The film 'Unified: Are You Ready?' made with a group of young dancers in conjunction with Déda and the University of Derby screened on Saturday 25th September to a packed market place on the BBC Big Screen. It was shown as part of the Festé celebrations and the dancers all received certificates and DVD copies.

Toothpix is presently mastering a DVD for Global Education Derby and creating a short digital presentation for Marketing Derby. This month we'll be shooting films for the Family Intervention Project, Speaking Up, Steps For The Future and Sarah Davenport Design.

Dance documentary to be shown during Festé

The Toothpix Aimhigher dance documentary is set to be shown on the BBC Big Screen in the centre of Derby as part of this year's Festé celebrations.

Festé is an annual festival in Derby bringing arts, music and excitement to the city centre over three days (September 24th-26th 2010) filled with amazing spectacle and breath-taking live performances, mixing the best of Derby with international artists.

Toothpix has been asked to help judge the Halloween Monster Movie Challenge 2010, which sounds like a great night out.

Last week saw the unfortunate closure of the Douglas Bader Centre in Leicester. The centre was set up to provide activities and training for people with serious physical disabilities and Toothpix was only too happy to provide footage from a recent production to ITV's Central News to support a feature they were running. The centre was shut down due to fire safety concerns and now faces an uncertain future.

Recently completed productions include a film for Derby City Partnership featuring hard to reach groups discussing their wishes for the future of the city, a Michael Jackson life-story for Abbey Primary and a dance film / documentary (pictured) for Aimhigher which combines an awesome music-video style vibe with quick-fire documentary segments.

Prestigious film festival success and two new films completed

We've just had the great news that a film Owen directed photography for, 'Office Orphan', a comedy directed by David Lilley of Loonatik & Drinks, has been accepted into the fiercely competitive Rushes SoHo Shorts film festival.
Office Orphan stars comedy duo McNeil and Pamphilon as they argue about the ethics of using an unpaid Dickensian orphan as an assistant in a modern office.

Owen shot the film on the Canon 550D, which was designed to be used as a stills camera but which, with a few extra gadgets, shoots amazing quality video.

Two more films have just reached a rough-cut stage: a film for wheelchair users in Leicester to take to primary schools as a tool for raising awareness (premiere at the New Walk Museum on June 30th - get in touch if you want tickets!), and a film for use in Derby to explain the Future Jobs Fund (premiere coming up at Derby QUAD).

Production is just beginning on a pair of films set around Parkour and street dance - and Toothpix have been acting as media consultants for Global Education Derby as they make a feature length documentary in a Media-Box funded scheme set to premiere as part of Derby City Partnerships week at the start of July.

Exciting new short film wraps production

Over the 12th-14th April, Owen Tooth directed 'All That Glitters', a short film with a dark take on the Narnia stories.
The short film stars Jo Irvine, Jon Glentoran and Nancy Boo Orchis-Evans - Nancy is four and a half years old and a brilliant actress to boot.
The shoot took place in an empty house in Holbrook, Derbyshire. Outdoor scenes were filmed on the Kedleston Estate. The crew of 17 people worked incredibly hard to bring the script to screen and the footage so far looks gorgeous.
Editing will take place over the next few weeks, followed by computer special effects and finally loads of work to make the audio perfect.

New film exhibited at The Public Gallery

Toothpix has just completed a film with a group of young people with learning difficulties about problems they face using public transport in Nottingham. The film follows a group as they meet people from Nottingham City Transport and put pressure on them to change things for the better.
The film was funded by the Big Lottery Fund via UK Youth.
Part of an exhibition called 'Hearing Unheard Voices', the film is being projected at The Public Gallery.
Here's a description of the work:
"A thought provoking set of installations by young people from around the UK and Sandwell. Designed to coincide with UK Youth’s national initiative of the same name to train young people in the skills to campaign for their rights, especially young refugees, carers, homeless and those from other sections of society who do not normally have their voices heard."

Short film added to Paranormal Activity DVD / Blu-Ray!

The short film 'Conceptual', directed by Owen Tooth, has just won a competition run on Youtube to be included on the forthcoming UK DVD and Blu-Ray release of the horror feature film 'Paranormal Activity'.

The competition was nationwide, looking for frightening short films which last three minutes. For the competition, Owen re-edited his award winning short film Conceptual which was originally six minutes.

The director of the surprise hit Paranormal Activity, Oren Peli, watched the entries and chose Conceptual with nine other shorts to go on the release as a bonus feature. Paranormal Activity followed in the wake of the Blair Witch project, proving that a low budget film can still make an impact on audiences and box office takings.

It's fantastic to see that Oren is encouraging other directors and using his success to bring attention to films which larger audiences would otherwise have missed.

Top prize Toothpix short in Cinema

The short film 'Labyrinth Derbicus' which won first prize at the 5 Lamps 24 Hour Film Competition, directed by Owen Tooth, has been selected to screen at the QUAD cinema in Derby before each screening of the new feature 'Micmacs' by Jean-Pierre Jeunet.

Jeunet has directed some breathtaking films including Amelie, City of Lost Children, A Very Long Engagement and Delicatessen. His visual style is unmistakable and his choices in casting are uniformly quirky and inspired.

Owen is thrilled to be able to see his work on the big screen alongside such brilliant European cinema.

Micmacs, by all reports, is a true return to form and one of Jeunet's best films to date. Screening times to be announced.

First Prize Award in Derby film competition!!!!

This weekend, Owen Tooth (directing) teamed up with James Knott to enter the Five Lamps 24 Hour Film Festival. Contestants had exactly 24 hours to shoot and edit a three minute film. All films were screened at QUAD, followed by the award ceremony. There were some brilliant films entered and it was a fantastic shock to take first place by unanimous decision from the judges ahead of stiff competition.

The prize includes free use of the University of Derby's RED camera for the next Toothpix short, currently looking set to shoot in February - as well as free cinema tickets and membership to QUAD for a year.

The film stars long time collaborator Jon Glentoran as a Wizard who uses magic to perform the simplest tasks. It was written by Stephen Loveless. Watch the film, titled 'Labyrinth Derbicus' and drop us an email if you enjoyed it.

In other news, Toothpix has just been awarded FIVE STARS by the East Midlands Brokerage Platform, a Quality Assurance programme that allows publicly funded bodies to recommend Toothpix for film work.

Effigy to screen with The Wolfman in cinema

Owen Tooth's unusual short film 'Effigy' has been selected by QUAD cinema in Derby to screen alongside the new feature film 'The Wolfman' from director Joe Johnston. The Wolfman stars Benicio Del Toro alongside Emily Blunt, Hugo Weaving and Anthony Hopkins - as well as Olga Fedori, star of the feature 'Mum & Dad' which Owen also worked on in the camera department.

The film is set for release in early 2010 and each screening will be preceded by Owen's short (six minute) film Effigy. The Wolfman had a budget of $85,000,000 while Effigy cost under £100 to make. The musical score for The Wolfman was composed by Danny Elfman, while the grand gypsy jazz score for Effigy was composed by Belper musician David Beard. The music really lifts the film from the screen and gives it a sense of scale and grandeur. Why not come along to one of the screenings and see them both for yourself?

Toothpix film gets screening at Bang! Community short film festival

Earlier this year, Owen Tooth helped a group of young people make a film with their parents. The project was over six weeks and took place at QUAD, Derby's centre for art and film.

The film 'The Lost Boy', a story of an adopted boy's search for his real mother and his revelations about what matters in his life, has been selected for screening by the Bang! Short Film Festival in Broadway Cinema, Nottingham on 28th November at 6pm.

The competition had over 300 entries and has been narrowed to a ninety minute compilation, so Owen and the rest of the team are thrilled to see it has been selected.

The film was made with Engage, a Lottery funded scheme to encourage family learning across Derby City to family members at risk of offending or re-offending.

In the last week, Owen's short film 'Effigy' has had two festival screenings; one at QUAD Derby Short Film 2009 and one at the MAYHEM 2009 horror festival in Nottingham, to great response.

Vinvolved premiere goes down a storm

The 'Youth Volunteering in Derby' film for Vinvolved has had a premiere at QUAD, Derby's centre for Art and Film.
It was projected in the Box, with free popcorn and drinks for all guests.
The stars of the film all arrived and collected awards for their hard work in planning and making the film.
There was some fantastic feedback and we ended up watching it twice!

Effigy to screen at Mayhem! Festival

Owen Tooth's short film 'Effigy' will be screened at this year's Mayhem! film festival in Nottingham at the end of October.
The film is shot entirely from 'point of view' shots, so it's all seen through characters eyes, and is a poetic romance with folklore themes.

Major premiere for Derby Youth Volunteering DVD

As featured in the Derby Evening Telegraph, the Toothpix film 'Derby Youth Volunteering' shot for Vinvolved is to have a premiere at a launch party at QUAD, Derby's centre for arts and film, on September 28th.

Here's a bit of the feedback we had from the film; "There's overwhelming unanimous praise for the finished product.
Happy smiley faces were evident during viewing so that can only be a
good thing!"

The film is designed to be shown as part of a lesson and the DVD comes with a lesson plan booklet and several DVD-ROM files to help teachers use the film in school.

It's a fast and colourful documentary showing what a difference one person can make - and also proving that young people aren't the terrible stereotypes the media often makes them out to be.

Toothpix has spent an evening shooting for Davenport Interiors, doing stills photography and video during a cookery night in one of their exclusive kitchens. The video was projected at the Design Show at Earls Court in London on the 18th of September, while the photographs will be used for their new website.

The film 'Unified' is being screened as part of this year's Festé celebration in Derby. It'll be on the BBC Big Screen in the town centre at 1pm, followed by snacks and a few speeches, giving a chance for the people who funded the project to meet the boys who danced in the film.

Later in the day, Toothpix may also be doing live camerawork for some of the major events taking place. Festé is a brilliant arts festival held in Derby annually over the first weekend in September, covering most of the city centre. If you've not been yet, get yourself down there!

Toothpix made a film at the Fat Cat Group's charity golf day under very tough conditions: we had four hours to film the event, followed by a mere four hours to edit the footage and master it onto DVD for screening at the evening event. It was a frantic day, but we did it - and the film was met by cheers and a big round of applause.

The short film about Evolution produced by Toothpix with St Thomas More school in Buxton was nominated for 'Best Instructional Film' and 'Best Documentary' in the DAFTA awards on June 25th.
Owen is incredibly proud that it WON the award for Best Instructional Film on the night.
Owen helped a group of students write the film with their wonderful teacher Karen Eades, and then led them through the production process using animation, greenscreen and computer graphics.
The film carries the 'Darwin 200' logo, celebrating the 200th anniversary of Darwin's birth.

Filming of the new Aimhigher film 'Unified' has wrapped. Aimhigher try to get more people considering higher education. The Unified shoot is directed at boys who are less likely to apply for courses.
The shoot was fast, covering many locations throughout the University of Derby, including the new Markeaton Street Campus and the new facade to the Kedleston Road building.

The BBC interviewed Sarah Davenport last week for Business Lunch. When they saw the photo series by Owen, they were so excited they asked if they could include the set in their broadcast. It should be aired on one of the first episodes after Wimbledon.

Toothpix usually only work in moving image so it's a pleasure to see one of the rare still photography shoots do so well.

Pop fact - Valeria, pictured with Sarah, is part of the Italian Consulate in Nottingham, so wherever she sets foot is technically in Italy.

Engage is a Derby City Council company which aims to improve parenting skills and get families involved in the community. Toothpix has been commissioned to make a film showing the incredible range of activities on offer. Filming has already started and included the intrepid Owen climbing a bare cliff-face on a rainy day, camera in-hand, on a rock-scrambling adventure. Owen has been working with Creative Partnerships / The Mighty Creatives in Mellor Primary School, Leicester, to train a group of eight and nine year-olds about film making. The project was unusual in that the pupils not only directed the film themselves, but also edited it – the group is now going on to shoot their own documentary and edit it unaided.

Editing has just been completed on a documentary for Handford Street Parkour, a free club for teenagers in Derby interested in learning about this phenomenal sport. The film was supported by Derby City Council.
